The Foundation’s library also acts as a support centre for new research. Its priorities are to address its users’ needs for bibliographic references (in-person, virtual or digital), providing access to its documentation and preserving the digital knowledge held by the library, as well as safeguarding and organising the knowledge generated by the Foundation throughout its history.
1974The Science Library was launched in 1974 with the collection of research work and publications produced under the Fellowship and Special Grants program that the Foundation started in 1958.
1977The Library shifted its focus after identifying a need to offer a leading bibliographic centre for people studying 20th century Spanish theatre
1981The Library received first bequest of playwrights: Carlos and Guillermo Fernández-Shaw
1983It created the Documentation Centre for Contemporary Spanish Music
1987It created the Library of the Advanced Social Sciences Study Centre of the Juan March Institute for Study and Research
1988The Library added a new subject area – illusionism – related to its existing specialisations in performing arts
1990Following legacies received from various composers and playwrights
1993It created the Spanish Library of Contemporary Music. The Foundation received the personal library of the Argentinean author Julio Cortázar, which was previously in his Paris home when he died
1997The Library received de Personal and Music Archive of composer Joaquín Turina
2003The Music and Theatre sections were combined to create the Spanish Library of Contemporary Music and Theatre
2008The Foundation decided to adopt a unified set of objectives for the Foundation's Library and the Social Sciences Library of the Juan March Institute
2011The Library launched a new bibliographic section dedicated to Curatorial Studies and Practices
2013The Library broadened its scope with a new strategic area – the Digital Knowledge Organisation and Data Service. The Social Sciences Library was donated to the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid
2014The organisation and cataloguing of the Contemporary Art Reference Library was incorporated into the Curatorial Studies and Practices section
2015Works began on cataloguing the personal library of Fernando Zóbel and the library of theatre scholar Francisco Ruiz Ramón
2016The Library further expanded its role by becoming a Centre for supporting research and the activities carried out by the Foundation
