Modern zarzuela and género bufo

Modern zarzuela and género bufo

The prevailing modernisation of the mid-19th century, Europe-oriented in general and Francophile in particular, saw the emergence of a Spanish-speaking genre modelled on the formulae of French comic operetta. These works adopted the existing label of "zarzuela" with the stated aim of continuing in the Spanish theatrical and musical tradition, and were presented as a transitional first step towards the construction of a long desired national opera. Zarzuela would quickly garner public favour and become established as a central element of the culture of the time, with one of its high points in the inauguration of the Teatro de la Zarzuela, promoted by Barbieri, amongst others, in 1856.
